Angenieux’s “HR” (high resolution) zooms are the predecessors to the Optimo zooms. The 17-102mm was meant to cover the range of a full set of primes. The lens has excellent reliable mechanics, and Angenieux’s now legendary image quality, rivaling, and in some ways even surpassing prime lenses.

The HR is sharp, high contrast, has low chromatic aberration, and almost no focus breathing. The lens produces lovely skin tones, and really nice bokeh character. It’s smooth, never busy, but still has some texture. Due to it’s more modern coatings, the HR’s flare character is beautiful and never overwhelms the image, but not as boring and clinical as newer lenses.
