STATERA comes from the Latin word meaning “balance,” and balance is integrated into every aspect of these lenses. The Statera primes are the result of a 3-year collaboration between Old Fast Glass and Ancient Optics. Our goal was to create a cohesive set of anamorphic FF+ lenses with the perfect balance of vintage character and modern performance.
The lenses are am amalgamation of vintage spherical lenses and new, modern anamorphic optics. We opted for a traditional variable front diopter focus system. A 1.5x anamorphic squeeze ratio was selected to maximize resolution, but still deliver a classic front-anamorphic look. We were able to achieve excellent close focus distances while maintaining Full Frame coverage.
These lenses are inspired by the most legendary anamorphic lenses from the 1970s and 1980s – Todd AO, Cineovison, Technovision, and Nippon Scope. With their vintage lens DNA, STATERA lenses are very flattering on your subject, especially on close-ups. Our focus system minimizes “mumps”, so human faces remain natural and proportionate. They do not suffer from extreme field curvature, or the soft corners typically associated with shooting anamorphic, so you can easily keep multiple subjects sharp across your frame. They also resolve really well all the way to the edges, with the perfect amount of fall off. With STATERA you don’t have to compromise your compositions just because you are shooting anamorphic.
Bokeh is always an organic shape. Towards the edges, bokeh starts to swirl, with a perfect amount of Petzval effect. Stopped down to T2.8 and bokeh is perfectly oval. Coatings are classic single-layer coatings that deliver a gorgeous organic flare character that never feels modern or over saturated.
Every lens in the set has matching focus and iris gear positions for fast lens changes. The lenses have 15-blade circular irises, which is crucial to maintain perfectly oval bokeh even when stopped down. Focus rotation is 300 degrees and smooth as silk.
Close focus capability was very important to us. Vintage anamorphic lenses typical have a 3 foot close focus (or longer). We were able to improve upon that dramatically. In fact our 75mm focuses as close as the Cooke Anamorphic 65mm Macro, Hawk Class-X 65mm Macro, and Xelmus Apollo 75mm! That is impressive company to be in. And our 135mm T2.9 focuses closer than almost any anamorphic lens in its range!
STATERA is the result of our 3 year journey to create the anamorphic lens people have been asking for, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Finally, cinematographers can have the vintage look they want with reliable mechanics and modern performance.
NOTES: STATERA Anamorphic lenses come standard in LPL mount. however, the 50mm, 75mm, 95mm, 135mm can be set up with either PL mounts upon request, and are compatible with film cameras. The 35mm and 40mm are LPL only, and are not compatible with film cameras.
