A Filmmaker's Guide to Sensor Sizes and Formats
Comparing 3 Sets of Canon Rangefinder Primes
The short explanation: all 3 of these lens sets are rehoused Canon Rangefinder still photo lenses from the 1960s. These lenses were used with Canon and Leica rangefinder cameras of that era, and typically had LTM mounts (Leica Thread Mount), which is why they are often referred to as Canon LTM lenses.

THE ULTIMATE CINEMA LENS LIBRARY is here...
We are thrilled to announce the 3rd chapter in the Ultimate Cinema Lens Library is here: The Ultimate Full Frame Lens Test, where we tested 20 sets of Full Frame Cinema Lenses. This follows our Ultimate Vintage Lens test (2016) when we tested 7 sets of vintage lenses, and the Ultimate Anamorphic Lens Test (2017) when we tested 13 sets of Anamorphic lenses. With the release of this 3rd chapter, there is also a completely new website which will host the Ultimate Cinema Lens Library. All the lenses from all 3 tests can be compared using the Quad-Player. There is so much data, history, and expert reviews. This is one of the best resources for tests and information about cinema lenses. And it’s a free resource to anyone who wants to use it. Click this link to check out the new website which is hosted by our partner ShareGrid.

Greig Fraser, ASC uses the OFG Lens Tests
Early in pre-production, cinematographer Greig Fraser, ASC caught wind of the Ultimate Anamorphic Lens Test which we conducted in collaboration with ShareGrid. We were about 3/4 through editing our test videos when Fraser asked if he could look at our test footage. He sat for hours with our editor watching video after video. He was able to narrow down his search for anamorphic lenses to just a few sets thanks to our tests.
At the time we didn’t know what project he was prepping for. It turned out to be VICE. He ended up selecting Todd AO anamorphic primes to shoot one of the film’s time periods, and Cooke i/anamorphic primes for the other. The lens tests helped him save hours and possibly days of preproduction time and money.
“It was incredible to see the extent of these tests. It very quickly allowed me to make aesthetic comparisons without needing to test these lenses myself. Because of that I was able to make an informed decision for my next film!”
- Greig Fraser, ASC

Reed Morano, ASC & LOMO Round Fronts
Reed Morano, ASC used LOMO Round Front anamorphic lenses to shoot “I Think We're Alone Now.” This film is beautifully shot and it’s an excellent example of what can be done with these amazing and unique lenses. Morano primarily used the 35mm and 50mm Round Fronts. The full American Cinematographer magazine article is below. American Cinematographer is an amazing resource. Old Fast Glass in ICG Magazine
ICG Magazine published an excellent article about the lens tests we conduct. This article was written shortly after The Ultimate Anamorphic Lens Test. You can see these tests on our website, on Vimeo and YouTube, but where they can truly be appreciated is on the ShareGrid website. Only there can you use the “Quad Player” to do a side-by-side comparison of 4 lenses, or the same lens at 4 T stops if you’d like. We have partnered with ShareGrid on 3 huge lenses tests, and our library of lenses is now up to 40 sets. We are currently editing over 300 videos from our Full Frame comparison test which will be added to the lens library in 2020.
