This is one of the only front-anamorphic zooms out there, and it’s one of even fewer vintage front-anamorphic zooms. Most anamorphic zoom lenses have anamorphic adapters attached at the rear side of a spherical zoom lens, and results in images with no oval bokeh, no unique “streak” lens flares, and loss of at least 1.5-2 stops of exposure. However, a front anamorphic zoom like this LOMO gives you all the beauty of front-anamorphic primes: the oval bokeh, the flare, the distortion, but with a full set of primes in one lens, and an impressive T stop! Only a few of these amazing lenses were built in the 1980s. Please do not confuse this lens with the LOMO Foton, which is not in the same league optically or mechanically. This is a purpose built anamorphic zoom, with optical quality on par with anamorphic primes.

This is a medium contrast lens. The overall color is warm, and the flares are a very striking mix of blue, pink, and amber. The lens is sharp, even wide open, has some of the softest bokeh of any anamorphic lens out there. Close focus is 3’ 3” from the sensor plane, but keep in mind it’s a very long lens physically, and that equates to about about 1.5’ from the front element, so you can get close-ups shots no problem. It has minimal focus breathing and classic anamorphic character. The only other front anamorphic zoom lens options are from Panavision, Hawk, and Cooke. It’s a large lens, but the images are like no other lens out there, and once this zoom is attached to the camera, you won’t need to change lenses again.

Our lens has had many mechanical improvements over the original including a custom carry handle, and upgraded gears for focus, iris, and zoom rings. We had a custom 6x6 light-weight matte box built (pictured) which is included with the rental (with top and side flags) and can accommodate up to three 6x6 filters (non rotating). This lens in NOT compatible with 138mm diopters or Rota filters of any kind.

NOTE: this is a large, heavy lens, that requires a studio bridge plate and dovetail plate. It will not work with 15mm LWS systems.
