Of all the Full Frame, modern lens options, BLACKWING7 are one of the few that has something that sets them apart from all other modern lens options. Their lens designs were inspired by 1930s to 1960s primes. Keep in mind these are NOT rehoused vintage lenses. These are new designs, based on older, proven lens designs. The lenses share their unique qualities across the full range of lenses, especially their trademark bokeh. It’s so beautiful, that we highly suggest shooting these lenses wide open whenever possible.

BLACKWING7 primes are the production versions of the TRIBE7 “binaries,” which we tested in our “Ultimate Full Frame Lens Test.” The original 10 sets of binaries were tuned to produce images that had more focus falloff, and quite extreme lens flares, most notable, the lenticular rainbow, halo pupil flare that has become one of the trademarks of the X-tuned BLACKWING7 primes.

The production models are available in multiple tunings. The standard Tunings are: S - the most controlled and conservative tinning, T - more expressive but still moderate tuning, and X which are the most extreme. However TRIBE7 built a custom tuned set for OFG. We offer 3 Tuning options.

T-TUNED - Single layer coated elements with medium flare character, medium fall off, medium contrast, and a moderate amount of lenticular “rainbow” flare.

OFG CUSTOM TUNED - Single layer coated elements, with more pronounced lens flare, medium fall-off, and slightly lower contrast. No lenticular “rainbow” flare.

X-TUNED + SKIN - Single layer coated elements, medium contrast, more pronounced lens flare, and pronounced lenticular “rainbow” flare. The SKIN modification features new front and rear lens elements that add more pronounced amber and red flare/ghost character.
